Breaking deafening silence with outrage : Part I
Every day, there are cases of eve-teasing, molestation, sexual assault, stalking and harassment. A number of researches have been carried out. Several committees have been set up. But none of them have come up with a winning formula to curb this menace. Perhaps the sociological difference between a male and a female child is the primary reason for the miserable plight of the fair sex who continues to be victimised at the hands of the demons strolling down the streets of the nation. Every day, in one part of the nation or the other, innocent females are molested, teased or even raped. To add to their woes, they are themselves blamed for their misery. While some politicians lambast the ‘weaker sex’ for its ‘provoking and revealing’ outfits as a trigger for such incidents, the guardians of the society viz. the police indulge in sophistry and besmirch the character of females. Consequently, the safety of females continues to remain imperilled.
Breaking deafening silence with outrage : Part III
It was 4:00 pm in the evening. A
large number of media persons and other VIPs had gathered to grace the
occasion. As the Chief Minister fluttered the green flag, the drivers lit
camphor and ran the wheels of their flower bedecked vehicles over lemons to
propitiate the deity. The ministers were
singing the paeans of their success and the milestones achieved by the Delhi
Transport Corporation under their ‘golden’ reign, when Ms Jagriti Singh, a
fellow media person played spoilsport as she narrated her ordeal.
“I boarded a bus from Janakpuri”, she began in a soft tone, “since it was a non a/c bus, it was terribly
crowded. When I asked a man to vacate the seat reserved for ladies, he refused
and even abused sotto voce. Throughout my journey, a few male passengers tried
to rub their shoulder against mine”, she continued as a drop of tear
trickled down her face.
“In the midst of my journey, my mobile phone was pick-pocketed when I
tried to protect myself from being groped by those monsters.” She burst
into tears, unable to hide her agony and helplessness at the moment.
Some people who otherwise take
pride in their refinement in tastes and cultural immersions find themselves
addicted to the display of unethical behaviour, hectoring and inhuman activities.
“later, when I tried to contact the nearest PCR van”, she continued,
“rather than offering me help, the errant
cops continued to wrangle on and dismissed my complaint saying, “Madam ji,
kismat acchi thi jo bach gaye. Zamaana kharab hai…ab bheed mei jara chedd diya, rape
thodi kiya hai” and they chortled as they barked”, she started sobbing again.
Indeed these words came as a
bolt from the blue and left the journalist drowned in the delirium of shock.
O’ judgement, thou art fled to brutish
beasts!
Thanks to the corrupt and
inefficient system, of which we are an integral part, such cases never find
light in the darkness. The media person could only be consoled by her fellow
brethren and assured of a legal trial.
The ceremony concluded in the
manner planned and little importance was assigned to the ordeal she had
narrated to the authorities.
