As 2012 fades into another new year, it is time for us to introspect on the milestones we could achieve, the promises we could keep and the hurdles that we could step-over successfully throughout the year. At the stroke of the midnight hour, as this year turns, we are presented with yet another opportunity to come to terms with life. Once again life beckons us to take a synoptic view of where we, as a society, are heading to, an account of all those contributions that we as citizens of India made to our motherland.

Not in the clamour of the crowded street
Not in the shouts and plaudits of the throng
But in ourselves are triumph and defeat
H.W. Longfellow

Indeed! To experience the thrill and exhilaration of success in life, a definitive goal is essential to which must be added enthusiasm and a penchant for hard work, an inherent desire to seek out problems and convert them to challenges. It is a shameful thing for the soul to faint while the body still preserves.

‘Tis better to have tried in vain
Sincerely striving for a goal,
Than to have lived upon the plain
As an idle and a timid soul.

At this juncture, when life is on the threshold of unfolding yet another plethora of surprises, both bitter and sweet, let us warmly welcome the approaching New Year 2013 with great zeal and optimism. It is imperative for us to make new resolutions and celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in our life, boisterously.

Here, I offer some thoughts and suggestions that may be pondered upon while initiating a voyage in the year 2013.

      1.       Make a New Year resolution :
Failure is virtually assured at the very offset because the resolutions are not made with serious intent and deliberation. It is crucial to harness New Year's temporary motivation into something that will carry you through an extended period of required effort. Often circumstances beyond our control crop up at the most unexpected and inconvenient times, leaving us baffled. So always acknowledge your partial success in you endeavour.

2.       Don’t reuse gifts as gifts :
Mirthful, as it may sound to be, but we as humans have an inherent tendency of reusing gifts as gifts irrespective of the sentiments attached to them. This has indeed led to commercialisation of relationships, the depth of which is often estimated in monetary terms. Every gift, however big or small it may be, has some emotions and sentiments attached to them, that ought to be valued and cherished by the recipient. Prudence demands that the true spirit of New Year be upheld by sharing gifts and not disregarding them or reusing them as present for others.

      3.       Organise a New Year bash :
Perhaps, New Year celebrations are incomplete without a boisterous party. Party hard and enjoy the company of your friends and foes alike this year ahead.
CAUTION : Don’t get drunk with ecstasy to the extent that you indulge in anti-social activities or hooliganism on roads. Don’t drink and drive, particularly on the eve of New Year. Carry yourself in a dignified manner and respect the morals and virtues of the society.

      4.       Enjoy delicacies at home :
There is no such fragrance that can compete with the aroma of a delicious home-cooked supper. After all, jo baat maa ke haath ke bane khaane mei hai wo kisi aur mei kahan? (Only a mother can cook the most delicious food for her family) However, I would like to add that this does not prohibit you from ordering food of your choice from outside.

      5.       Set a yardstick for yourself :
New Year’s eve is truly an occasion for celebration. But it is also the time to peep into your future. Instead of wandering aimlessly throughout the following year seeking solace in you meagre achievements, set a yardstick for yourself. He who does not prepare for storms when no storms are indicated lacks in plain preparatory wisdom required by any rational person.

I would like to conclude with the following lines :

Two men looked through the prison bars,
One saw mud, the other stars.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013!!!

Breaking deafening silence with outrage : Part II

17 December, 2012: It has been a year since Mr. Srivastava initiated a quest to identify the reason behind such heinous crimes and seek ways to stem them; as yet another case of assault and brutal gang rape of a 23 year old physiotherapy student of Delhi has come into limelight. The brutality with which the heinous act was perpetrated in a moving bus has brought back the painful memories of similar incidents and the helplessness with which we tolerate them. As the entire nation is reflecting outrage, anguish and grief over the horrific rape and battery of the young woman, Mr. Srivastava once again finds himself back to the square one. Several questions remain unanswered, thus causing a deafening silence to prevail.

Does the grooming of young men to have a feeling of masculinity and entitlement erode the possibility of respect for women? Are women still seen as unwanted, burdensome and merely an object of lust and contempt? How does one account for the strange contrast between our outrage about rape and our remarkable unwillingness as a society to do actually nothing about it?

Even in the 21st century, girls are killed before birth, starved and neglected as infants, denied education, respect, safety, freedom, brought up to be bartered into marriage, assaulted and even raped!

Severe dearth of moral values, lack of faith in and the fear of god and the absence of fear of law have indeed triggered crime against women. Moreover, it is the perverted minds, stimulated by distorted sex literature that they wait for the moment to satiate their wild desires. Even nut and bolt measures, like enhanced funding for forensic investigations, upgrading training of police to deal with such crimes and post trauma support available to the victims, are conspicuous by their absence.

As the entire nation pray for the survival of the young woman and for the sins to visit upon the perpetrators with such vehemence that it will render all potential criminals incapable of even contemplating such an act, Mr. Srivastava pen down the following ten ways of punishing the guilty, that echo in the heart of every Indian and that have the potential to serve as a deterrent to those who dare to indulge in such barbaric acts:

1.  Rigorous life imprisonment.
2.       Death sentence viz. the culprit should be hanged till death.
3.       Castration of the culprit to leave him scarred for life.
4.       To electrocute the culprit to death and make him experience the agony he inflicted upon the victim.
5.       To stone the culprit to death and make him writhe in unbearable pain.
6.       To expose the culprit to public scorn and let them decide his fate thereafter.
7.       To force the culprit to sit on a fast unto death and let hunger embrace him in its arms.
8.       To leash the culprit with a whip till all his 206 bones crack down to pieces.
9.       To drench the culprit with an inflammable liquid and set him ablaze.
10.   To shoot the culprit with a rifle and let his soul rot in a garbage bin.

The need of the hour is to shun the despicable notion that a woman’s body is the repository of family honour. It is high time for us to realise the need to inculcate and strengthen the moral values in the society, particularly the males. Let us pledge to bring an end to such spine-shilling crimes and award stringent punishment to those who try to outrage the modesty of a woman. Let us unite to fight for strict enforcement of laws and express our solidarity with the victims by participating actively in the nationwide candle vigils and protests that are being organised by various NGOs and activists for the aam aadmi.

Breaking deafening silence with outrage : Part I

It was 4:00 pm in the evening. A large number of media persons and other VIPs had gathered to grace the occasion. As the Chief Minister fluttered the green flag, the drivers lit camphor and ran the wheels of their flower bedecked vehicles over lemons to propitiate the deity.  The ministers were singing the paeans of their success and the milestones achieved by the Delhi Transport Corporation under their ‘golden’ reign, when Ms Jagriti Singh, a fellow media person played spoilsport as she narrated her ordeal.

“I boarded a bus from Janakpuri”, she began in a soft tone, “since it was a non a/c bus, it was terribly crowded. When I asked a man to vacate the seat reserved for ladies, he refused and even abused sotto voce. Throughout my journey, a few male passengers tried to rub their shoulder against mine”, she continued as a drop of tear trickled down her face.
In the midst of my journey, my mobile phone was pick-pocketed when I tried to protect myself from being groped by those monsters.” She burst into tears, unable to hide her agony and helplessness at the moment.

Some people who otherwise take pride in their refinement in tastes and cultural immersions find themselves addicted to the display of unethical behaviour, hectoring and inhuman activities.

later, when I tried to contact the nearest PCR van”, she continued, “rather than offering me help, the errant cops continued to wrangle on and dismissed my complaint saying, “Madam ji, kismat acchi thi jo bach gaye. Zamaana kharab hai…ab bheed mei jara chedd diya, rape thodi kiya hai” and they chortled as they barked”, she started sobbing again.
Indeed these words came as a bolt from the blue and left the journalist drowned in the delirium of shock.
O’ judgement, thou art fled to brutish beasts!
Thanks to the corrupt and inefficient system, of which we are an integral part, such cases never find light in the darkness. The media person could only be consoled by her fellow brethren and assured of a legal trial.

The ceremony concluded in the manner planned and little importance was assigned to the ordeal she had narrated to the authorities.

Every day, there are cases of eve-teasing, molestation, sexual assault, stalking and harassment. A number of researches have been carried out. Several committees have been set up.  But none of them have come up with a winning formula to curb this menace. Perhaps the sociological difference between a male and a female child is the primary reason for the miserable plight of the fair sex who continues to be victimised at the hands of the demons strolling down the streets of the nation. Every day, in one part of the nation or the other, innocent females are molested, teased or even raped. To add to their woes, they are themselves blamed for their misery. While some politicians lambast the ‘weaker sex’ for its ‘provoking and revealing’ outfits as a trigger for such incidents, the guardians of the society viz. the police indulge in sophistry and besmirch the character of females. Consequently, the safety of females continues to remain imperilled.
