A bride’s fight for her pride

Ostentatious marriages have
ruined several families beyond repair and lowered the dignity and status of
women in the society whose worth is measured in terms of the dowry they bring
with them. Surprisingly, those who discuss debate and talk about simple
marriages seldom practise it. Isn’t it ironical that a society that worships
the Almighty in its female avatar fails to protect the rights and future of its
daughters? Isn’t it disheartening to witness the commercialisation of a
pristine and auspicious relationship between a man and a woman?
Expensive invitations, glamorous
venues, a corporate style event management team attending on the guests, ever
increasing menu and the entertainment with highly paid artists are proliferating
the simple act of marriage. The votaries of lavish marriages should come
forward and develop innovative solutions if we are to behead the demon of dowry
and restore the pride of a woman in the society. Rich and famous can have a
significant impact on the outlook of people if they come forward to conduct
simple marriages. The rich doing it will be applauded but the same act by the
choice less poor will be ridiculed. Marriage should not be seen as a way of
business promotion or status declaration. Its venerability and sanctity should
not be degraded or polluted. By reducing expenses on ostentatious marriages,
the saved money can be productively invested in the name of the couple for
their future use – to buy property, jewellery or to start a business. Priests
and other religious heads should mobilise the parents to follow the dos and
don’ts of a simple marriage and encourage them to share the expenses equally so
that neither family suffers. Media and social activists can bring about a
radical change in the society and help in shunning orthodox notions attached to
the institution of marriage. The groom’s family ought to see the bride as their
son’s life partner and not merely a source of money and dowry. Even the bride
and the groom should pledge a healthy relationship free from avarice of either
family’s resources.
It is important to empower a
woman and make her financially independent and self-reliant by imparting her
proper education and skills. There is a need for change in the people’s
mind-set and we need to bring that change ourselves.
